This Simple Strategy Will Help Your Child with Descriptive Writing

Having your child stretch their sentences out with descriptive language can be a challenge at first. With this simple strategy, your child will begin to brainstorm on ways to make their sentences pop!

The strategy is as simple as asking questions. Who is the sentence about? What are they doing? When? Where? And why? The more questions you ask, the better the sentence will become.
Let's say your child begins with a topic: a dog.

Who? A dog.

Doing what? A dog is barking.

When? This morning, a dog is barking.

Where? This morning, a dog is barking near the window.

Why? This morning, a dog is barking near the window because it sees a cat outside.

Expanding sentences requires addition descriptive language such as adjectives, adverbs, and prepositional phrases.
