20 Creative Writing Prompts for Kids

With the unexpected time at home due to school closures from COVID-19, you may want to build creative writing into your child’s weekly routine. Following are 20 original creative writing prompts for kids of all ages: 

  1. Write the origin story of your favorite book or movie character. Where did this character grow up? Who were their parents? How did they become who they are? 

  2. What is your favorite meal? Describe the meal with as much sensory detail as you can: taste, touch, sight, sound, and smell. 

  3. Create an island. Who (or what) lives there? What does it sound, taste, feel, smell like? What conflict exists? 

  4. Write a short biography about someone you admire. 

  5. Pick your favorite TV show and write a new episode for the series.  

  6. Write instructions to teach someone how to live a day in your life. 

  7. Create a world that is part real, part magic. What happens there? Who experiences the magic? Is the magic good, bad, or both? 

  8. Add a chapter to your favorite book. 

  9. Write a story that ends with hope. 

  10. Write a story that takes place beneath the ocean. 

  11. Invent a new plant or animal. What does it look like? What does it do? Where does it live? Does it have any predators? 

  12. Write a story from the perspective of a flying bird. 

  13. You are having tea with a famous person. Write a play about the experience.  

  14. Write a story that ends with the phrase, “But it was only a dream.” 

  15. Write a poem that has a number in every line. 

  16. Reflect on a time you felt proud. 

  17. Draw a picture then write a story about it. 

  18. You have a pair of glasses that helps you see into the future. What do you see? 

  19. Write a story from the perspective of someone in your family. (A person or a pet!) 

  20. Write a poem about a color.
