Schedule Your Math Checkup!

Whether looking for practice with the fundamentals or a new challenge, the Math Checkup is a useful tool for families to improve their children's math skills. The Math Checkup assesses the level of your child and any foundations that need attention before advancing into more challenging concepts. This assessment enables the learning specialist working with your child to determine the levels and lessons necessary to move forward in our math curriculum.

The math curriculum at Academics Plus is foundational and cumulative. Students learn strategies for addition and multiplication to build automaticity and improve memory. Without the use of calculators, students are able to listen to or read instructions, process the information, select problem-solving strategies, and perform mental calculations. This arithmetic practice, all while learning more advanced mathematical concepts, helps with working memory and comprehension of numerical value.

At Academics Plus, we take a multi-sensory, hands-on approach to teaching. Students learn foundational skills such as place value, using visual and tactile representations of amounts. In addition, children learn practical skills such as counting money and manipulating measurements. Incorporating movement into practicing math facts allows for strong encoding of information so that it can be accessed during long-term memory retrieval. When students use ball bouncing during math drills, they are simultaneously learning through movement, sight, touch, and sound. This multi-sensory, hands-on approach makes learning more fun and prevents regression.

Academic Plus sessions are one-on-one to ensure students receive the individualized attention they deserve. This style of learning also mitigates anxiety due to competition in the classroom. The math curriculum at Academics Plus is a great refresher for after school or during the summer and propels students into higher level math to achieve confidence and academic success.
